Peace | 10 Bible Promises for Mamas
The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7
As I began praying over this series, 10 Bible Promises for Mamas, I asked God to reveal promises in His word that would encourage the hearts of tired, weary, and overwhelmed mamas. My prayer was that God would tell of specific promises that would inspire us to trust and cause us to take hold of His hand. And as I was praying over these specific promises in His word, the very first promise He put on my heart was the promise of His peace. I believe the reason why this promise came to mind before all the others is because this battle for peace we experience as mamas begins long before our babies ever enter the world. In the season of trying, praying and waiting for a baby, carrying that sweet baby for the nine months until their arrival, and then praying fervently over and through the birth of that child – all of those things, like most things in motherhood, are simply out of our control.
When there is nothing we can do but pray and wait on the Lord, our hearts can become anxious, weary, and filled with unrest, and these feelings can lead us away from taking hold of the peace of God that has been promised to us as His children. Even when our world feels like there is no way for peace and our present circumstance feels like it’s out of control, God’s word declares “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:17). God is in all things, present in every circumstance, faithfully holding everything together. Because of this, we can have the peace that surpasses all understanding. Our peace is found in our access to His constant presence in every moment and everything.
At the start of 2021, we were almost a year into the worldwide pandemic, our son was in the midst of the four-month sleep regression and our family was walking through some really hard things. And with all those feelings of anxiety and isolation, the peace of God felt completely out of reach. With the start of each calendar year, I ask the Lord to reveal one word He has for me to learn and press into for the year, and in my crying out, I remember Him speaking over me “I will show you the way to peace.” So, I began praying, searching, and asking God to reveal to me the meaning of the peace that surpasses all understanding…His peace, because that was the peace my heart was so desperately needing and searching for. I’ve found that in my own life that when things feel out of my control, I tend to grip harder and control more, but in those seasons, God is inviting me to open my hands, trust Him and take hold of His promises.
In all that praying and searching, God has continually shown me this truth- His peace is the promise of His presence.
“We do not find true peace in places at all, but only in the person of Christ.” – A. Raleigh
The peace of Christ is not a feeling, not our doing, and not a temporary thing, it is a promise, based on what Christ has done, and it will last for eternity.
1. Peace is not a feeling, it’s a promise.
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
John 14:27
While a feeling is an emotional state or reaction to a situation, a promise is a declaration or assurance of what is and what is to come. As our circumstances change, our feelings will too. But, the peace of God is a promise, of what is and what is to come, which is God’s presence now and forever more. When our feelings waver, filling with fear, weariness, anxiety and unrest, may our hearts take captive those feelings and set our minds on Christ, trusting in who He is, what He’s done and what He’s promised to us. Let’s declare the constant, unwavering peace He gives that is His presence in all things.
2. Peace is not based on our doing, but it’s all because of what Christ has done.
And the effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever.
Isaiah 32:17
We live in a world that is all based on effort, where the way to success is trying harder and doing more. I wonder if that’s why we seek so hard to be in control and why it’s so hard to trust in the faithfulness of God. By the grace of God and His death on the cross, our belief in who He is and what He’s done declares that we are made righteous, and the outcome of that righteousness is peace. We have done absolutely nothing to earn it, nothing to deserve it. His constant presence and perfect peace are simply gifts for us to receive. Let’s receive these gifts with thanksgiving and press into what Christ has done for us, which has made a way for peace, quietness and trust forever.
3. Peace is not temporary, it’s eternal.
You keep him in perfect peace
whose mind is stayed on you,
because he trusts in you.
Trust in the Lord forever,
for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.
Isaiah 26:3-4
Our circumstances are temporary, transient, “light momentary afflictions” (2 Corinthians 4:17-18), while they may feel heavy and hard, filled with overwhelm and desperation, they are but a moment. God is inviting us into His perfect peace, which is eternal, in Him there is no end. He is calling us to fix our minds on Him and trust in His truth. Let’s set our minds on what is to come, pressing into His perfect peace that is now and forevermore.
Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all.
2 Thessalonians 3:16
God is inviting us to take hold of His peace in every moment, every circumstance and every season. The peace of Christ is not a feeling, not our doing, and not a temporary thing, it is a promise, based on what Christ has done, and it will last for eternity. The truth is the nearer we move to Christ, the more we will experience His peace. When our feelings change, we try harder and we get stuck in the moment, let’s ask ourselves, “what am I trusting in?” and fill our hearts with the truths about His peace.
Mama, this is God’s invitation to you, a life filled with the peace of Christ which surpasses all understanding. Will you reach out your hand and take hold? In whatever this season brings you, whether waiting for a baby, sleepless nights, tantruming toddlers, the busy schedules of homework, carpooling and rushing out the door, there is one promise that is true – His peace is the promise of His presence, and this is God’s invitation to you. May we fix our minds on all that is to come, when we will finally be with Him, face-to-face, in the presence of Christ, Our Savior, forevermore. This is the hope of eternity to come, when our battle for peace will finally be no more.
As a way to celebrate these 10 Bible Promises for Mamas, I have collaborated with my dear friend, Annalisa Sawtell, who is an incredible artist with an inspiring love for Jesus and a heart for seeking beauty where truth and grace collide. Each week, she will be releasing a floral art print that captures the heart of each promise. Our hope is that mamas would download these weekly prints as a way to reflect on the weekly promise and embrace the scripture that reminds us of each truth.
