Liam’s First Birthday | “You Are My Sunshine” | First Birthday Party
And just like that, this sweet boy is officially one year old and I’m still over here wondering where the time went! It feels like just yesterday we were holding him in our arms for the very first time on a beautiful, sunshine-filled morning in July, and now, here we are! I can’t believe he’s already ONE.
To celebrate his first birthday, we filled our backyard with our dearest family, friends and neighbors, with all the neutral, boho, sunshine decor and a beautiful charcuterie spread. We truly had the most lovely party to celebrate and love on our sunshine boy!
I guess you could say planning children’s birthday parties may just be one of my new favorite things! I loved every second of dreaming the whole party to celebrate our boy, crafting up all the little details and delighted in creating a beautiful space to gather with all the ones we love. If you’ve been following along here for any amount of time, you can probably see I’ve got a thing for neutrals, so I kept the neutral vibe with pops of golden sunshine all throughout the decor.
When I was thinking about themes for his party, the idea of sunshine came to my mind because this sweet boy is such a ray of sunshine in our lives. In choosing the theme, “You Are My Sunshine,” my hope is that it’s a reminder for us to look back on for all the years to come of our joyful, golden, sunshine boy and the sweet song that we love sing to him each and every day when he wakes up the morning.
As a part of the decor, I made DIY Terracota Vases (click here for a video tutorial on how to make your own) and also made DIY party hats using recycled clothing, and I love the texture they each added to the party! Now, these vases are filling all the corners of our home and they make my heart so happy to look back on and remember Liam’s birthday party!
As every good party has a story and there were a few moments leading up to the party that were unexpected surprises and always make me laugh when I think back about them now! The first that comes to mind is what I like to call “the cake fiasco!” It was the day before the party and I was so excited to start baking Liam’s birthday cakes, I have a love for baking and have always enjoying baking and decorating cakes. So, I go to turn the oven on, and there’s a fire inside! Without thinking, I quickly toss a little water in the oven to put out the fire (note: this is not the thing to do!), and my oven completely stopped working, no power, nothing! So, instead I spent the whole afternoon baking in the ovens of all of my gracious neighbors with delicious cakes and a story to tell.
When I was thinking about food for the party, charcuterie was the first thing that came to mind! I mean, who doesn’t love the idea of a table filled with a beautiful display of meat, cheese, crackers, spread, fruit and more. I love the charcuterie has a way of gathering people in one space, and it’s always just so pretty!

Happiest first birthday, Liam Tate Murray!
I truly don’t have the words to express all that this year has been and the love that we have for this sweet boy. I can’t believe that one year ago, on a beautiful, sunshine-filled morning just like today, you entered our world and changed our lives forever. We remember it all like it was yesterday, the surreal, beautiful, overwhelming emotions of finally calling you ours, of holding and kissing you for the first time. We knew we loved you then, but every day since you were born our hearts have fallen more in love with all that you are.
Watching you grow over this past year has been our greatest joy. We absolutely adore who you are and every day of knowing you is simply the best! You are filled to the brim with joy, love others with the biggest love, live life to the fullest, love to sing, tell stories and happy squeal, are always on the move and so close to taking your first steps, curious and filled with wonder and still more obsessed than ever with your puppy.
Liam Tate, you are everything we prayed for and more, I have tears as I write this to and about you. Because of you, we have seen God’s grace and kindness unlike ever before and we thank Him everyday for the undeserving gift of calling you our son! We pray you come to know how truly loved you are, by your mama and daddy, all our family and friends, and most importantly, by the Father’s love that is deeper and wider than you could ever imagine.
We can’t wait to keep loving you, celebrating you, praying for you, and cheering you on for all the years to come.
