Guidance | 10 Bible Promises for Mamas

The steps of a man are established by the Lord,

when he delights in his way;

though he may fall, he shall not be cast headlong,

for the Lord upholds his hand.

Psalm 37:23-24

If I’ve learned anything since becoming a mama, it’s that motherhood is sanctifying. It’s filled to the brim with constant change, trials and new normals, and in that, God is sanctifying us (which is to be made holy and set apart for the God’s purpose in the world) and humbling our hearts to surrender as we learn, adapt and grow with all that each new season brings. I don’t know if there has ever been a season in my life where I’ve thought, “I don’t know what to do,” more than this. But, in all this learning, adapting and growing, God is inviting us to embrace His guidance and experience His loving hand in a whole new way.

If we had all the answers for every change and new normal that motherhood brings, we would miss out on the opportunity to seek the Lord to guide us, which humbles are our hearts and draws us back to the cross, each and every day. God delights in a heart that is dependent on Him, and He uses motherhood to sanctify us and remind us of our need for Him, as we surrender our plans and declare His ways higher than our own.

God not only promises wisdom to those who follow Him, but He promises to establish our steps and declares that He is with us in all things. When our lives are under the guidance of the Lord, He transforms wisdom into action. We can trust that our lives are under the divine guidance and control of God, even in the changes, trials and every new normal that motherhood brings.

When we are made righteous in Christ, we are hidden under the loving hand and care of the Father, the same God who is leading and guiding us every step of the way. If these are Christ’s promises to us – to lead us, guide us and establish our every step, then how do we access this promise when we find ourselves thinking, “I don’t know what to do” in motherhood?

God promises to guide us when we seek Him in prayer, dwell in His word and surrender our plans in exchange for His ways.

1. God promises to guide us when we seek Him in prayer.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

James 1:5

When we find ourselves in the changes, trials and new normals that motherhood brings, may we first seek the Lord in prayer. Prayer is simply “talking to God,” our interaction and conversation with our Creator. As we pray, in humble surrender and declaration of our need for Him, God promises to give us His wisdom. When we lack wisdom and don’t know what to do, let’s turn our hearts to the Father, believing that when we ask, He will answer, because He is generous, full of compassion and He simply delights when we come to Him.

2. God promises to guide us when we dwell in His Word.

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Psalm 119:105

When we find ourselves in the changes, trials and new normals that motherhood brings, may His Word become our light in the darkness, leading us through every doubt, difficulty and distress. As we seek His word, He is faithful to show us the way, but could it be that we are not allowing his Word to dwell richly in our hearts (Colossians 3:16) or aware of its power, living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12)?

God gave His Word to live in us, to inhabit our souls, and He desires for the power of His word to lead, guide and draw us back to His heart. Let’s seek His word as a lifeline and behold this light He has given us to shine into the darkness.

Tip: If you struggle to read your bible, try leaving it open and accessible in the places you reside most often in your home. Whether it’s on the kitchen counter or on the coffee table, when we see His Word often, it will become a constant reminder and invitation to our souls.

3. God promises to guide us when we surrender our plans in exchange for His ways.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,

and do not lean on your own understanding.

In all your ways acknowledge him,

and he will make straight your paths.

Proverbs 3:5-6

When we find ourselves in the changes, trials and new normals that motherhood brings, may we remember that our God is trustworthy and sovereign over all things, and He is calling us to surrender our plans in exchange His ways. God has a perfect plan for our lives, and surrendering to Him means that we choose to set aside our own plans to eagerly seek His ways.

This surrender is not just a one-time thing, but a constant declaration of our need for Him to guide us at all times, in all things. As we make decisions and think, “I don’t know what to do,” let’s lift our eyes to our Maker, acknowledging that He is trustworthy, allowing Him to guide us as he makes our paths straight.

So mama, let me ask you, are you living under the divine guidance of God, with a heart dependent, surrendered and in love with your Maker? As we live our lives under the divine guidance of God, our hearts will move from God, show me what to do,to God, I need more of you.

Mama, this is God’s invitation to you… a life led by the divine guidance of God in every change, trial and new normal that motherhood brings – will you humbly surrender and take hold? When the waters of motherhood rise and we find ourselves thinking “I don’t know what to do,” may this become our new rhythm – to pray, read and surrender, believing that our God is trustworthy, faithful and perfectly in control.

Whether you are needing guidance in navigating those sleepless nights, loving your children when they tantrum and disobey, or knowing what to do in the demands of it all –  the busy schedules, the chaos of raising children, in all the decisions that motherhood brings, He is offering us guidance in it all. May we be the mamas who choose to take hold.

As a way to celebrate these 10 Bible Promises for Mamas, I have collaborated with my dear friend, Annalisa Sawtell, who is an incredible artist with an inspiring love for Jesus and a heart for seeking beauty where truth and grace collide. Each week, she will be releasing a floral art print that captures the heart of each promise. Our hope is that mamas would download these weekly prints as a way to reflect on the weekly promise and embrace the scripture that reminds us of each truth.
